Fresh Produce Tips

Here are some helpful farm facts and fresh produce tips on how to select, store and cut fresh produce. Click on the fruit or veggie below to learn all about them!

Fresh Produce Storage Containers

I love fresh produce but it’s hard to keep it fresh. Here is a list of my favorite fresh produce storage bags and containers! They will help keep your produce fresh longer.

  1. Onion Basket

Onions should be stored in a cool, dark place, such as the pantry. Here is a great basket that you can use to hold all of your onions in the pantry. You can also use these for potatoes or apples! Click here.

  2. Potato Storage Basket

Potatoes and sweet potatoes store best when they are in a cool, dark place. Just be sure to keep them AWAY from the onions. This basket is perfect for keeping the light out as well as keeping them dry in your pantry. They fill from the top, and dispense potatoes from the pocket below. Click here.

  3. Cloth Produce Bag

Also known as the Swag Bag. One of my absolute FAVORITE items to keep fresh produce in the fridge. This bag can store many different types of produce such as lettuce, green onions, bell peppers, etc. Just be sure to get the bag wet prior and then squeeze out the water. The damp cloth keeps the fruits and veggies hydrated and protected for the cold. Click here.

  4. OXO Produce Keeper

This produce container is specifically designed for the fridge. It has an adjustable vent on top for humidity but I would personally store produce such as carrots, zucchini and cucumbers in this container. The carbon filter absorbs ethylene gas from the produce which slows it down and reduces spoilage. The elevated colander has the produce lifted away from the container walls to keep it from rotting. 5. Salad Spinner and Keeper

This salad spinner kills two birds with one stone! Add chopped lettuce or greens to the bowl. Pump the handle until they are dry. Then use the basket as a colander and the bowl goes right to the table as a serving bowl. Click here.

  6. Berry Box

I have a bunch of these classic farmers market berry boxes. They are made out of porcelain and are not only cute, but also a functional. Fill the basket with fresh strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. This berry box doubles as a colander for rinsing and straining berries when you are ready to eat them. Click here.

  7. Woven Basket

This is going to be best for stone fruit that is not ripe yet. Place it on the counter or on top of the fridge while you wait for the fruit to ripen! Just make sure you check on the fruit and eat or place in the fridge as soon as it is ripe. Click here.

  8. Wire Basket

This is another fantastic basket for produce that should be stored in the pantry. The design makes for great airflow and easy to see what you have in the basket when on a shelf. Click here.
